Germany’s most famous hiking trail is the 168-km (100-mile) Rennsteig, that runs along the highest parts of the Thuringian Forest. It has been in use as a trade route since 1330. The total route is between 700 and 900 m (2,300-2,950 feet) above sea level. Most of the route is surprisingly level, but with steep inclines at both ends. The way is clearly marked with a white “R” and is fairly busy from April to September. The total walk is traditionally done in six days, hiking west-to-east, starting from Hörschel, near Eisenach, and ending in Blankenstein. Hiking shorter sections is also popular, as parking lots, bus services, and restaurants are scattered along the way, making flexible options possible. Most hotels on the path offer a luggage forwarding service. Many tourist offices in the region arrange packages of various lengths for hikers. Some offer guided tours although solo hiking is also popular.
